Needlerock
Needlerock

Needlerock is the remnant of a volcanic plug that pushed up through the crust and due to the hardness of the basalt from which it is made, has eroded significantly slower that the surrounding shale and sandstone. It originate as the throat of a large volcano about 28 million years ago and stands 800' above the floor of the Smith Fork of the Gunnison River Valley.

Located within the western edge of the West Elk Mountains. From Crawford take Dogwood Avenue east out of town. Dogwood turns into Needlerock Road. There is a BLM trail that rings it.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison exposes you to some of the steepest cliffs, oldest rock, and craggiest spires in North America. With two million years to work, the Gunnison River, along with the forces of weathering, has sculpted this vertical wilderness of rock, water, and sky. The North Rim is 11 miles southwest of Crawford. From Hwy 92, turn west on Black Canyon Road (3 miles south of Crawford) and follow the signs. The last 7 mile is unpaved & the road is closed in the winter.

The Gunnison River within Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is designated as Gold Medal Water & Wild Trout Water. Streams and rivers in Colorado are designated as Gold Medal Waters by the state wildlife commission because they provide outstanding angling opportunities for large trout.

From that prime piece of prehistoric real estate on a natural rock terrace, they hunted mice and grouse and gathered wild grains and seeds.

The museum is open May - August on Friday - Sunday & September - April Saturday 1 pm - 4 pm. Special tours and visits by appointment call 970.872-3780
