Black Canyon - North Rim

Big enough to be overwhelming, still intimate enough to feel the pulse of time, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park exposes you to some of the steepest cliffs, oldest rock, and craggiest spires in North America. With two million years to work, the Gunnison River, along with the forces of weathering, has sculpted this vertical wilderness of rock, water, and sky.

Black Canyon's steep, narrow cliffs and roaring river below inspire curiosity. Like a large building, we want to know how it was built. How long did it take? What are the materials? Understanding local geology answers all these questions and fosters an appreciation for the forces used to construct this canyon.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison exposes you to some of the steepest cliffs, oldest rock and craggiest spires in North America. With two million years to work, the Gunnison River, along with the forest of weathering, has sculpted this vertical wilderness of rock, water, and sky.

The North Rim is 11 miles southwest of Crawford. From Hwy 92, turn west on Black Canyon Road (three miles south of Crawford), and follow the signs. The last seven miles is unpaved and the road is closed in the winter.

Even expert kayakers find the Gunnison River an extreme challenge. There are Class V rapids and some sections cannot be run. It is recommended that only the most experienced and well equipped kayakers attempt this run.
Wallace Hansen: “Several western canyons exceed the Black Canyon in overall size…some are longer, some are deeper, some are narrower, and a few have walls as steep. But no other canyon in North America combines the depth, narrowness, sheerness, and somber countenance of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison.”
The Gunnison River within Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is designated as Gold Medal Water & Wild Trout Water. Streams and rivers in Colorado are designated as Gold Medal Waters by the state wildlife commission because they provide outstanding angling opportunities for large trout.
