 | Many areas in Crawford Country are natural migratory routes for Elk and the outlying areas are popular as Elk birthing grounds for hundreds of does. At various times during the year, you may seek wild pheasants, hawks and eagles, and also coyotes, rabbits and an occasional mountain lion.
Winter temperature lows are around 15 degrees with an average of 30 degrees F. Summers are mild with average temperatures of 75 degrees to 85 degrees F.
Recreation abounds in the area. Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is a few minutes drive from town, where a narrow opening canyon with sheer walls as much as 1,200 feet deep displays the Gunnison River Gorge like no where else. National Forest areas offer mountain biking, hiking and horseback riding during the summer, while snow-shoeing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling are popular in the winter.
